Not a recommendation, but a suggestion--I haven't personally read this one, but I did check it out on Amazon: The Backyard Homestead.
One reader comments that you don't even need a back yard to do some of this--she does it on her apartment balcony.
Another suggestion: Fresh Food From Small Spaces
Commenters say no topic is covered in-depth, but gives a good broad overview of "square-inch gardening."

Fresh Food From Small Space is a great book! I've been checking tons of gardening books out of the library, learning a bunch more stuff to grow my own food. We're planning out our edible landscape, hoping to add even more food producing plants to it. We just bought 4 more blueberries yesterday, and we're hoping to get a few apple & cherry trees later this week.
We're close to getting a house, and I want to do the same--why mow when you can pick and eat?
Well okay, mowing would be a source of compost food, but there's mowing-bagging up-curbing neighbors who can do that for me, right? They're even nice enough to have it all ready for me to drive by (in a truck I haven't got yet) and grab it.
I'm also planning to sell off or trade in my "Old Comfy" Park Avenue for a small pickup.
