No, I'm not suggesting you go out and douse your plants with a fire extinguisher, but old and expired fire extinguishers do contain powdered phosphorus, which can be put directly into your soil.
To find this powder, contact a fire station or look in the phone book for companies who refurbish fire extinguishers--they remove the old powder and replace it with new, and can use places to put the old powder. I've got a composter that could use a good dosing for next year's dirt.
A typical extinguisher doesn't hold enough powder to make any bombs, so tough luck to any readers who might have terrorism on their minds.

Great idea, I'm always game for free, from coffee grounds from the local coffee shop to bringing home compostables from friend's homes.
