Martha--my vet contacted the UC Davis College of Veterinary Medicine, and unfortunately, the doctor is no longer there, but the software to design diets IS still there.
The Davis Campus doesn't communicate with patients directly, but they will communicate through your vet. If they have a specific question about items you plan to use in the diet, they will call you directly.
They had me on the phone for about an hour, asking things like how many fat grams are in the meat I plan to use, how many milligrams of calcium were in the calcium supplements I take (so I could use them in the cat food), what kind of eggs I buy, etc.
After talking with me, the vet formulated a diet based on our conversation plus the CBC results from my vet (faxed over). My cat was low in calcium, taurine, and a few other things, as well as diabetic, so the diet was designed to boost these items, as well as address her diabetes and energy level.
At the time, the recipe cost me $125--I'm sure the price has gone up since then. That diet bought her 8 additional years with me. She died on July 2008 at the age of 17.
I still use it to feed my remaining non-diabetic cat, and she's doing extremely well.
