After dodging many payday-fattened holiday shoppers on the road, I managed to make it to the butcher, who specializes in grass-fed, pastured, organic meat. The EXACT SAME GOOSE I got from Kroger for $2.99/lb. was available from him for $7.99/lb., and whole duck was going for $5.99/lb. (not the same as Kroger had, but not marked organic, free-range, pastured, or anything else--as far as I know, it may have been commercial).
Are these birds farmed, or otherwise mass-raised like our cows and pigs? I don't know, but am interested in finding out. If they aren't farmed (and I don't really see how you can farm a bird that flies, unless you raise it in a building, and clip the wings), then Kroger has my bird business from now on.
