Duck, Duck...Goose! Update

I went hunting today, and found goose for $2.99/lb. and duck for $2.79/lb. at Kroger. Mama brought home a goose. The label says it was "free-range", and I'm betting it was more like "free-sky."

Whole chickens ranged from $2.49/lb. (commercial) to $3.99/lb. (organic). I believe the ducks and geese were commercial, but will venture out tomorrow to a butcher who specializes in pastured, organic meats to see if he carries whole duck and goose, and the price charged.

I was glad to see Kroger put these birds, and all the other miscellaneous not-turkey birds out front in big freezers where the turkeys once sat, so people could actually see them. They may get freaked out by the total price, but how can you walk away from a price-per-pound like that?

Had I been paying attention in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, I probably could've gotten an even better per-pound deal, but hey...better late than never. Now I know for next time, now that I've discovered the joys of unusual poultry.

Hubby says to check out the Asian markets for a possibly better deal--they use duck a lot in cooking. I'm checking them out next. I did manage to check out a Caribbean grocery store I normally go right by, and they had 5-lb. bags of cut ox tails, bags of turkey tails (which I hear are illegal in the U.S., and delicious in soups--no confirmation on either yet), chicken feet, goat meat, and other unidentified meats in packages. Two things stopped me from buying anything:

1. What is the origin of this meat?

2. How was it fed/cared for?

I might go back there and ask these questions when it isn't so busy inside.
