4 Things You Should Consider Before Purchasing a Kettlebell

From Yahoo Sports.

"Kettlebell exercises can be very beneficial for an athlete, but it important that he or she use the kettlebells properly, which can help him or her avoid injury. An athlete needs to know which type of kettlebell to purchase before beginning an exercise routine, especially if he or she has never used a kettlebell before.

Here are four things that an athlete should consider before purchasing a kettlebell, which can help him or her prevent injuries while exercising.

Know Your Fitness Level

An athlete needs to make sure he or she knows his or her fitness level, before purchasing a specific kettlebell. If an athlete is more physically fit, then he or she will be able to perform exercises with a heavier kettlebell. If an athlete is new to exercising in general, and lacks muscle strength, then he or she should use a lighter kettlebell. If an athlete uses a kettlebell that is too heavy for him or her to control comfortably, this could result in severe injuries. An athlete that is new to working out should opt for the lighter kettlebell, because he or she will not have the fitness level required for intense exercises. An athlete should also keep his or her fitness level in mind when determining what type of routine he or she wants to use the kettlebells for, which should be considered before even purchasing the kettlebell.

Have an Exercise Routine in Mind

An athlete that is going to purchase a kettlebell also needs to have an exercise routine in mind, because certain exercises require a certain size kettlebell. An athlete does not want to be using a heavy kettlebell for one-handed exercises, since this could increase his or her risk of injury. If an athlete knows he or she will be performing mostly two-handed swings and exercises, then he or she can choose a heavier kettlebell. If an athlete goes into purchase a kettlebell without knowing what type of exercises he or she wants to do, then he or she is likely to purchase the wrong item, which can result in injuries, and also result in him or her wasting money.

Consider Your Own Weight

An athlete also wants to consider his or her own weight, especially before purchasing a kettlebell, since there are a lot of different sizes. An average male athlete will likely start off with the 16 kilogram kettlebell, and an average female athlete should start off with the eight kilogram kettlebell. An athlete wants to think about the kettlebell in relation to his or her weight, because if he or she is skinner, then he or she should be using a lighter kettlebell. An athlete that is above average weight or strength should choose the heavier kettlebell, which can provide him or her with a more challenging workout.

Know Your Health and Physical Limitations

An athlete should know his or her physical limitations before purchasing a kettlebell, and make sure that he or she is in good health. Kettlebell exercises require a lot of physical exertion, especially to various muscle groups, which can be dangerous for an athlete with physical limitations. An athlete that has high blood pressure and other medical conditions, should be checked out by a doctor before purchasing a kettlebell, to ensure that the workout is safe for him or her. If an athlete has arthritis or other conditions that limit movement or grip in the hands, he or she should opt for the lightest kettlebell possible, since a lot of hand strength is required for proper use of the kettlebell. If an athlete is unsure whether or not he or she is physically able to use the kettlebell properly, he or she should seek medical care, so that a doctor can help him or her determine if the exercises are safe."
